General Budenny, the con- queror of Denikin, xvith 5000 cavalry drove through the center of the Polish lines southvest of Kiev. Having broken through, he divided his forces into three detachments, one moving on Berdichev, another on Fastova, while a third rode on to Jitomir threatening to cut the line of communication to Kiev. The brilliant action made necessary the evacuation of Kiev to prevent its isola- tion. The tide of battle now turned against the Poles on every portion of their front. Much stronger Bolshevist forces harassed their retreat
